Dodgers @ Rockies September 4, 2013: Why Not Drew Butera, Too?

coorsfieldI love absolutely everything about the lineup you see over there. I really, truly, love it. I want to take a picture of it, then frame it, then take a picture of that and frame that too.

That’s the kind of lineup that says “we nominally acknowledge that this is a regular season major league baseball game, sort of, I guess, because we have a 13 game lead in the division.” With just three regular starters — A.J. Ellis, Hanley Ramirez, & Juan Uribe — this is the kind of lineup you take to Scottsdale or Goodyear in March, not to Denver in September, or at least you would if you didn’t need to take four starters to those games. I mean, a first place team is rolling out an outfield of Jerry Hairston, Skip Schumaker, & Scott Van Slyke. Simultaneously. And I love it.

After all, why not? Why not sit Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez and Mark Ellis and Andre Ethier at the same time you’re rolling out Edinson Volquez? I was only half kidding when I said they should just forfeit all remaining games at Coors Field, which I kindly called “a wretched hive of scum and villainy,” and so my only question here is, why not just go all the way?

Bring me Drew Butera. Toss Dee Gordon out there, who apparently can’t even get into a fake game. Let Stephen Fife and Peter Moylan and Carlos Marmol clean up the mess Volquez is sure to make. Is there still time to track down Elian Herrera? Get him up, activated, and in the lineup too. The Rockies are just so irrelevant and the ballpark just so full of bad memories that it makes perfect sense.

I imagine that the entire month isn’t going to go quite like this, and that we’ll start seeing some more “traditional” lineups again this weekend against the contending Reds and next week against the not-quite-dead-but-yeah-they-are Diamondbacks. But for now, with a month before the playoffs, what the hell. Let Michael Young hit cleanup again. For the lulz, right?

So after a few hundred words of jokes, some real news: Ken Gurnick reports that Chris Capuano will start on Friday in Cincinnati rather than Hyun-jin Ryu, with Clayton Kershaw & Zack Greinke to still start on Friday and Saturday. Ryu last started Friday against San Diego, and apparently is dealing with some back soreness. If he then starts on Tuesday against Arizona (still an if, though Ricky Nolasco is slated to go on Monday), that would give him ten days of rest.
