Dodgers @ Rockies September 3, 2013: Michael Young, Cleanup Hitter

coorsfieldDylan Hernandez comes in with the tweet of the day, coming shortly after the lineups came out this afternoon, where he noted that an unnamed person in the press box asked, “is that lineup for real?”

This is the beauty of being 12.5 games up on September 3 and playing a non-contender in your traditional house of horrors, I suppose, because this isn’t exactly the group you could expect to see when the playoffs start one month from today. Yasiel Puig sits, as we knew he would, but so do Hanley Ramirez and A.J. Ellis and Juan Uribe. Ramirez sat on Sunday against the Padres, and so everyone is now worried that something’s wrong, given what seems to be an excessive amount of rest. (Hernandez notes that it’s just a day off.) Of course, Coors Field is so evil that I’m not only fine with him sitting, I wouldn’t mind if he was already on his way to Cincinnati. Hell, just forfeit the next two games and be done with it.

Michael Young makes his debut in the starting lineup, and he’s hitting cleanup. Because, of course. Young is the first August 31 pickup to hit cleanup in his first start for his new team since Jeff Conine did so for the 2003 Marlins, per J.P. Hoornstra.

Matt Kemp, still hitless in his rehab assignment for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, has left the Quakes and will report to Arizona to continue his recovery there. He’ll get “10-12 ABs per day in sim games,” reports Bill Plunkett, and we shouldn’t expect to see him back before the Arizona series next week at the soonest.

Finally, in a move so expected it’s not even news at all, Chris Withrow was recalled to join the bullpen. As you can see in the table below, September roster expansion brings more relievers than a manager usually knows what to do with, though that doesn’t quite explain why J.P. Howell appears to have been off on a spa vacation or whatever for most of the last two weeks.
