Cubs @ Dodgers August 28, 2013: A Rare Midweek Day Game At Home

I’ve mentioned a few times this year about how odd the schedule has been, with the Dodgers a few times having had to make cross-country flights to get back to California (from New York twice, and also Toronto) to play the next day. Today (well, tomorrow, really) we’re seeing the flip side of that, because after today’s 12:10pm matinee against the Cubs — the first time all year, other than Opening Day, there’s been a mid-week home day game — the Dodgers get the rare “day off in the middle of a homestand” before welcoming the Padres to Dodger Stadium on Friday night.

That’s almost certainly an incredibly welcome sight for the players, because not only is tomorrow a day off, it’s a day that they won’t have to waste traveling. They’ll get nearly two full days off to relax and spend time with their families, and that’s valuable at this point in the year. But for us, it means we’ll be going more than 48 hours without Dodger baseball, and that’s.. well, slightly less fun.

As you might expect, Don Mattingly has made a few changes to his usual lineup on a day game after a night game, and that’s why Jerry Hairston gets the start at first base while Adrian Gonzalez sits. But while that usually means that Yasiel Puig drops back to the cleanup spot, that’s not the case today. Andre Ethier hits fourth in center field, and Puig pushes up to leadoff.

That means that Carl Crawford won’t be leading off for the first time in his Dodger career, and instead will move back to the #2 spot that he occupied for so much of his time in Tampa Bay. I’m assuming this is more Mattingly’s attempt to “shake things up” more than anything, because both Puig & Crawford are speedy runners. It does make for a L/R/L/R order at the top of the lineup, anyway.

Also of note, per Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA, tomorrow’s day off will not affect the pitching rotation. Hyun-jin Ryu, Chris Capuano, & Zack Greinke will start against San Diego this weekend.
