Dodgers @ Marlins August 22, 2013: Kershaw Will Do Something Great Today

marlins_homerIt’s too early for this. Seriously. I’m on the East Coast, and even I think this is too early, so I can’t imagine how all of you dealing with 9:40am baseball feel.

But that’s also why everything’s set up perfectly for Clayton Kershaw to do something crazy like toss a perfecto today. I mean, think about it:

– he’s facing a Marlins lineup that has talent but very little experience, and guys who are around almost entirely for defense like Adeiny Hechavarria & Jeff Mathis

– a 12:40pm local time start on a Thursday in front of a Marlins fanbase that has been terribly spurned may equal about 17 people in the stands; as Ramona Shelburne noted, tickets are available for just $5

– a 9:40am start in California on a workday against the Marlins means that television ratings can be expected to be lower than usual…

– …and even lower than that because once again, this is a KCAL game that won’t be viewable for those with Time Warner

So you have the best pitcher in baseball at the top of his game, facing a poor lineup at a time where the fewest amount of people possible are going to be able to watch. If that doesn’t sound like a no-hitter is coming, you haven’t watched baseball for very long.

Otherwise, Hanley Ramirez and Mark Ellis get the “day game after a night game” rest, but everyone else is in as usual. Nick Punto starts at shortstop, while Yasiel Puig gets another chance to break his slump in right field. We noted last night that he didn’t appear to be running well to first base, and we’ve since learned that he was cramping due to dehydration and required an IV. The first one to make a terrible “he was out clubbing with LeBron James” joke can show themselves out.
