Rockies @ Dodgers July 11, 2013: Puignado

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150So is this Yasiel Puig business getting slightly out of hand or just excessively out of hand? By all indications, the entire business about Puig “disrespecting Luis Gonzalez” is all but entirely fabricated, and this is all to the point where I’m almost happy that he lost out on the final spot in the All-Star Game to Freddie Freeman, just so we can get a reprieve from this ridiculousness for a few days. I’ll probably have more to say about this situation at some point, but for now, I’d rather just focus on baseball. (And Sharknado, of course.)

So let’s just take a deep breath, realize that this is a team on an outstanding run, and try to focus on something other than Yasiel Puig for just five minutes, okay?

In other news, Yasiel Puig is starting at center field for the first time as a Dodger, which… oh. I guess there’s just no avoiding him, is there? Which is just ridiculous, because I’m still not even sure what he’s done, really. There’s absolutely no doubt that Puig has brought on a lot of this himself with his brash play — and again, more on that to come — but I also can’t really say that I’m that upset that whiny Miguel Montero is whiny, especially when his own manager, Kirk Gibson, didn’t really back him up.

Anyway, Don Mattingly is rolling out the “house money” lineup tonight, with Scott Van Slyke, Jerry Hairston, & Tim Federowicz all starting. Yes, that’s technically two days in a row off for Carl Crawford, but he did end up getting four plate appearances yesterday, so that sort of defeats the purpose; besides, I can’t say I hate the idea of Crawford & Ethier both sitting against lefty Drew Pomeranz. The emergence of Puig aside, it’s still kind of mind-blowing to realize that the Dodgers are not starting any of Crawford, Ethier, or Matt Kemp tonight.

Most importantly, the Brewers have jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Wade Miley and the Diamondbacks thanks to a first-inning Jonathan Lucroy homer, and that’s a game to keep an eye on. Conceivably, the Dodgers could be just a half-game out of first tonight, but that will depend in large part on Chris Capuano supporting a thin bullpen.
