Dodgers @ Giants July 5, 2013: Welcome Back, Carl Crawford, Sort Of

At long last, Carl Crawford is back! …aaand he’s not even in the lineup, which, okay, I guess. While it sounds weird, I suppose it makes a certain amount of sense, since Andre Ethier has had some success against Matt Cain and you can’t sit Matt Kemp after he’s finally shown some signs of life. I suppose we’ll have a lot of fun parsing the benched outfielder every day for the next few weeks. Unsurprisingly, Scott Van Slyke heads back to Albuquerque to make room, and while I get the arguments that others should have lost their jobs instead, I can’t say I can get that irked about it. Van Slyke will be back soon enough.

In minor league news, third baseman and known tweeter Ian Stewart has signed with the Dodgers and will likely report to the Isotopes. Stewart isn’t that great, but the cost is zero and organizational depth at the position is non-existent, so this counts as good news. Doing any real analysis typing on a phone on vacation is hard… so I won’t. Enjoy the game.
