Phillies @ Dodgers June 29, 2013: Lefty on Lefty

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150The last week or so of Andre Ethier, including tonight, goes like this: bench, CF, CF, CF, RF, CF, LF, LF, bench. If this is what a healthy roster looks like, I love it. Forget Ethier’s contract for a moment, and realize that you’ve turned him into a roving outfielder who can play where needed and easily sit against tough lefties, like Cliff Lee tonight. That may be more difficult to do when Carl Crawford returns, but right now, that’s a really, really nice situation to have.

I just wanted to point that out before getting to the news everyone wants to talk about, and that’s the unexpected promotion of flamethrowing righty reliever Jose Dominguez to the bigs after just eight games in Triple-A. Peter Moylan was optioned back to Albuquerque to make room.

Dominguez, 23 in August, is known nearly as much for the two drug-related suspensions that have cost him time (50 games in 2010, 25 this year) as he is for the fastball that has been known to reach 103 miles per hour. In 2010, Dominguez tested positive for Stanozolol; it’s unknown what tripped him up this year, but it’s not thought to be a PED since he didn’t get popped for 100 games. (Most likely, it was failure to comply with a procedural issue related to his treatment or initial suspension.)

In 283.1 minor league innings, Dominguez has struck out 312; in 25.1 innings this year between Chattanooga & Albuquerque, he’s whiffed 40. I liked having Moylan around, but I’m excited to see what an arm like Dominguez can do.

In quick injury news: Josh Beckett is officially out for the season as he’ll need to undergo nerve surgery, and former Dodger prospect Alfredo Silverio may yet find his way back to the team now that he’s going to need a second Tommy John surgery; he was selected by the Marlins in the Rule 5 draft and has been on the disabled list all year.
