Giants @ Dodgers June 25, 2013: Matt Kemp, Playing in June

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Four days ago, the Dodger outfield in San Diego was Elian Herrera, Skip Schumaker, and Yasiel Puig. Tonight, we’ll be treated to Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, and Puig. That’s…. a little bit better, wouldn’t you say? It could be getting even better soon, because Carl Crawford may be back on the next road trip, and Scott Van Slyke should be back even sooner than that after continuing his rehab with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. I know there’s a lot of open questions about how they’ll all co-exist, but I can certainly say that I like the idea of that quintet a whole hell of a lot better than I do any lineups that have Herrera, Schumaker, or Jerry Hairston in the outfield.

But of course we’ve buried the main story here, and that’s that, after a short rehab stint in Triple-A Albuquerque, Kemp has been declared healthy and returns to the lineup for the first time since May 29. He’ll play center field and bat fifth; As expected, Herrera has been returned to the Isotopes to make room on the roster. To be honest, I’m not all that thrilled with the idea of returning Ethier to right and moving Puig’s powerful arm to left field, but it’s not that surprising in the end. Credit Ethier for playing a passable center in Kemp’s absence, I suppose.

Actually, we’ll be seeing something tonight that we haven’t seen in quite a long time, and that’s Kemp playing a baseball game in June. Considering he’s missed all of this month, and sat out all of last June thanks to another hamstring pull, we haven’t seen him in June in nearly two full years, dating back to when the Dodgers lost 1-0 in Minnesota on June 29, 2011. That was so long ago that the last time we saw him in this month, he was sharing the starting lineup with Tony Gwynn, Casey Blake, Marcus Thames, & Dioner Navarro.

In some happier news from around the minors, the top two Dodger picks from this year’s draft, Chris Anderson & Tom Windle, each made their debuts tonight for Single-A Great Lakes. Anderson struck out five in two innings, hitting 90-96 regularly, while Windle struck out two in two scoreless innings of work. Over at Baseball Prospectus, two Dodgers made the “Mid-Season Top 50 Prospects” list — Corey Seager at #35, and Julio Urias at #41. Neither had been on the Top 101 prior to the season, so that’s a nice step up for each.
