Giants @ Dodgers June 24, 2013: Ryu. Bumgarner. Go Time.

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Breaking news — the Dodgers have cut Ethier! Oh… make that Devon Ethier, Andre’s 23-year-old brother, who hit .153/.254/.210 in parts of three rookie league seasons and hadn’t played this year. They’ve also apparently signed German teen righty Sven Schuller, who likes FishVille & pretzels, and who we will almost certainly never reference again here.

Speaking of players we should never expect to be wearing Dodger blue… Jonathan Sanchez is making his debut for Triple-A Albuquerque tonight, and it’s been, uh, interesting. He is getting his velocity up to 93-94, reports Chris Jackson, but it took him 30 pitches to get through a first inning that saw him allow a single, double, triple, and two runs. (The triple, apparently, may have been a catchable ball that Matt Kemp lost in a tough New Mexico sun; Kemp at least walked and stole second in his first time up.) Sanchez has an opt-out date of July 1, so there’s not that much time to get a look at him. Of course, he can easily choose not to exercise that option if he doesn’t think there’s a major league job waiting for him elsewhere.

But back to the matter at hand, and that’s the tasty matchup of Hyun-jin Ryu and Madison Bumgarner tonight as the Dodgers return home after a grueling road trip to face the third-place Giants, who are barely keeping their own heads above water with a mark of 38-37. San Francisco has lost 12 of 21 June games, so if the Dodgers plan to turn things around… well, now would be a good time.

The Giants received bad news of their own today when they learned that outfielder Angel Pagan, who hadn’t played in a month, will miss the next 10-12 weeks due to hamstring surgery. Pagan signed a 4/$45m deal in the offseason, so… maybe it’s not just the Dodgers that this sort of thing happens to. But of course, they have Gregor Blanco stepping in to hit .304/.357/.406 in Pagan’s absence, so the point here is really just that I can’t stand the Giants.
