Dodgers @ Yankees June 19, 2013: Game 2

yankeestadiumBoy, that first game was so much fun, wasn’t it? From the tenor of Dodger fans online, no one seems all that eager to do it again, and it’s hard to blame them. This team has lost six of eight, they’re in last place, they have more losses than anyone except for Milwaukee, Miami, & Houston… and perhaps worst of all, their ESPN Playoff Odds of 1.8% are identical to the Mets. The Mets!

We can all argue with each other about whether it’s the manager or the players or the trainers or the front office, but it really doesn’t matter. With the exception of Clayton Kershaw, Adrian Gonzalez, Yasiel Puig, and maybe a few others, everyone here shares some blame. It simply couldn’t be this bad without it being a group effort.

So now we get a lineup that has Skip Schumaker hitting leadoff, Jerry Hairston at first base — since Gonzalez gets a chance to DH — Luis Cruz existing, and Hanley Ramirez at shortstop, and it’s hard to drum up a ton of enthusiasm. That said, I am headed off to the stadium on what looks like a gorgeous night, so there must be some reason I’m invested enough to spend an evening there. (At least, I assume, I won’t be seeing Ronald Belisario.)

We will be seeing Chris Capuano, activated off the disabled list in between games. Capuano hasn’t started since May 29 and hasn’t been great even when he was healthy, but then again, Phil Hughes has been a bit of an up-and-down train wreck himself. Overall, though, he’s basically the same pitcher he always was — Hughes’ 4.60 FIP is just about identical to the 4.56 and 4.58 marks he’s had the last two years, though he’s now doing it with more strikeouts and more walks.

In order to activate Capuano, Alex Castellanos was optioned to Triple-A. I imagine another move is coming at some point, because that’s now 13 pitches on the roster.
