You Might Say Yasiel Puig Is Off to a Good Start

puig_debut_battingI don’t want anyone to think I’m not properly focusing on Yasiel Puig and how phenomenal his first two games have been, but it’s one of those weeks at work. So here’s what I can say: he is the only Dodger in history to have at least two homers in his first two games and one of just 16 in baseball history. (Oddly, however, this is the third time in the last calendar year, since both Manny Machado and Yasmani Grandal did so last season.) He’s one of just 14 hitters ever to have three extra-base hits in his first two games (a list that includes Manny Ramirez), and he’s one of only three to have five hits in his first two games.

Puig has been a sensation, and so far he’s been everything we could have hoped for and more. And I do mean “and more,” because interspersed with his incredible feats have been a few of the over-enthusiastic plays that we worried might get him into trouble, like taking a much-too-wide turn around first on Monday that probably should have been an out, and foolishly throwing from right to third base last night that ended up being an error and a San Diego run.

So far, he’s following the “Matt Kemp 2006″ script pretty well, and the real question will be if he can keep up the productivity when pitchers start figuring him out, which Kemp could not until a return trip to the minors. I’m trying to remind myself that it’s just two games and that even Dee Gordon was hitting over .400 after two games earlier this season. But Puig isn’t Kemp, and he’s certainly not Gordon. Right now, he’s wowing fans and players alike with his feats, and if that comes along with some growing pains, I think most will live with it. There’s still a long, long way to go, but: so far, so great.
