Rockies @ Dodgers April 30, 2013: Hanley In, Crawford Out

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Hanley Ramirez is back! For real this time. Yes, Ramirez is in the starting lineup for the first time in 2013, hitting fifth and playing shortstop. With Juan Uribe next to him at third base and both Luis Cruz & Justin Sellers on the bench, I believe this makes the ninth different SS/3B combo Don Mattingly has penciled in to his lineup this year. It’s the 26th game of the season. Baseball is wonderful — unless you’re Ted Lilly, with whom the Dodgers are reportedly unhappy after hiding his back soreness. Let’s consider this the 1,244,238th example of a player hiding injury and it ending poorly. But don’t worry, Ted. We’re unhappy with you too.

I do use the words “penciled in” on purpose, because the original lineup tonight had Andre Ethier on the bench, Carl Crawford leading off, and Jerry Hairston playing right field. Unfortunately, Crawford felt something in his right hamstring after batting practice, so he was scratched and the lineup shifted.

While Crawford’s concern isn’t expected to be serious, it does make for a constantly moving roster. I imagine Mattingly will do whatever he can to stay away from Crawford tonight, and Mark Ellis remains active yet probably unavailable. (Why no move has been made there yet is just beyond me.) But even if you did want to dip into the minors to add fan favorite Alex Castellanos, you couldn’t — he’s been placed on the seven day disabled list in Triple-A with inflammation in his right forearm.

So with all that being said, the bench tonight may be comprised of Ramon Hernandez, Sellers, Cruz, & Skip Schumaker. That’s right, even though it’s a Hyun-jin Ryu start, A.J. Ellis is behind the plate, so perhaps our assumptions of “personal catcher” were premature. That said, Ellis has had regular time off and Thursday is an off day, so it would be difficult to justify.

Schumaker may be available off the bench, but here’s to hoping we don’t see him on the mound tonight. One man we know we won’t see is Josh Wall, who was unsurprisingly optioned back to Albuquerque after throwing 62 pitches yesterday. Javy Guerra joins the team for the first time this season to take his place.

Finally, condolences go out to both Clayton Kershaw & Ned Colletti, who each lost a parent in the last few days. Kershaw is still expected to start in San Francisco on Friday.
