24 Hours to Hyun-jin Ryu

It’s 2pm in the Pacific Time Zone. Do you know where your Hyun-jin Ryu is?

As we’ve been slowly, agonizingly waiting for resolution of the Zack Greinke situation and all the dominoes that will follow it, we at least know that within the next 24 hours, there will be news. The Dodgers are either going to have added Ryu, or they won’t.

Of course, I’m paying lip service to the idea that this won’t get done, because of course it will. These posting deals almost always get done, and I’m pretty sure Ryu’s Korean team wouldn’t be too happy to welcome him back having lost their chance at a $25.2m posting fee. He wants to play in America, he’s passed his physical… as I’ve said several times, I’d be floored if this doesn’t get done.

The only uncertainty here, as far as I’m concerned, is what kind of deal he ends up with. Scott Boras wants a shorter deal, to get Ryu to free agency more quickly, and of course the Dodgers want a lengthier deal to justify their posting fee. My best guess is that they’ll settle for a four-year deal, and Ryu will slot comfortably into the fourth spot in the rotation behind Clayton Kershaw, whomever else they import, & Chad Billingsley.

We’ve known all along that the Dodgers want two pitchers, so signing Ryu is just half the battle. When, and with who, will we see the other shoe drop?
