Giants @ Dodgers October 1, 2012: Cain vs Harang

Well, hey, at least there’s this: the Dodgers are playing baseball in October. What more could you ask out of a season, right?

As they head into their final series of the season, kicking off three against Matt Cain and the Giants while praying that the Reds can take at least two from the Cardinals, you wouldn’t really think that having Aaron Harang on the hill is a scenario anyone would want. But I’ll say this for Harang – despite how little we tend to think of him, he’s been remarkably consistent. In 9 starts over the last two months, he’s not once allowed more than three earned runs. That’s not the same thing as “great”, because since he rarely gets past six full innings giving up a run every other inning isn’t stellar, and that’s shown in his 3.47 ERA over that span. Still, he’s been able to avoid the disaster start for the most part, and if the Dodger offense can perform anything like it has over the last week, maybe a typical Harang outing is good enough.

Then again, let’s not forget that the Dodgers had the good fortune of playing what was essentially a Double-A Colorado squad over the last few days, and they won’t have that luxury tonight against Matt Cain and a San Francisco team that is playing all of its regular starters. So staying alive for another day depends not only on beating Cain, but on Bronson Arroyo being productive tonight in St. Louis. It could happen, right? …right?
