Dodgers @ Diamondbacks September 11, 2012: Kershaw vs. Kennedy

After yesterday’s well-received post about A.J. Ellis‘ spot in the order, Don Mattingly responded by moving.. ha, no, Ellis is still hitting eighth and the rest of the lineup is the same as it always is. And why should we have ever expected anything else?

But that’s okay, because there’s bigger and better news tonight: Clayton Kershaw & Matt Kemp are both back in the lineup, despite some worry this morning, based on an Enrique Rojas report, that Kemp might not actually return until the St. Louis series. Kemp only ended up missing two games after his shoulder MRI, and while that at least gives us some optimism that it’s nothing truly serious, it’s also not going to be much of a help if he’s not able to produce more than he had before sitting out.

Kemp and Kershaw aren’t the only returnees tonight, as Dee Gordon, Elian Herrera, & Stephen Fife were all recalled from Triple-A now that the Albuquerque season is done. Gordon swaps places on the 40-man roster with Adam Kennedy, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a groin injury that will hopefully end his Dodger career. The Dodgers now have 33 active players on the roster – well, 31, since Kenley Jansen & Juan Uribe are included, and neither of them count – and I’d be surprised if we see any further moves, so anyone dying to get another look at Tony Gwynn or Scott Van Slyke can probably keep on waiting.

It’s nice to see Gordon back, but his playing time is probably limited to pinch-running duties at most, possibly getting some shortstop time if the Dodgers end up in a blowout. Herrera’s merely another bench guy, and I guess having Fife around means that we’re not likely to hear the end of “why isn’t he starting ahead of Joe Blanton” questions any time soon.
