Dodgers @ Giants September 7, 2012: It’s Go Time

Here’s why Adam Kennedy is going to go 4-4 for tonight: because there’s no earthly reason he should be in the lineup. Yeah, I get it, he’s hitting “.381/.480/.381” in the oh-so-massive sample size of 21 plate appearances against Tim Lincecum for four teams over the last six seasons, and that’s almost certainly why he’s in the lineup. Of course, all eight of those hits are singles, and three are in the game logs as seeing-eye grounders or bloops, and 21 plate appearances over six years tells you almost nothing, and Luis Cruz is not only a far better defender, he’s had hits in 19 of his last 21 games, hitting .386/.413/.523 over hist last 24 games.

You should never, ever put too much importance on hitter-vs-batter stats unless it’s the only tiebreaker in an otherwise even race, and even though I can’t explain it, Cruz is without question the superior player. That’s why it’s silly for Kennedy to be in, especially after a day off and even more so putting a second lefty behind Andre Ethier… and that’s why there is no question that he is going to go 4-4, just to troll us all. That’s the most Adam Kennedy thing Adam Kennedy could do. And it’s not like this game is important or anything, right?

Joining Cruz and friends on the Dodger bench will be Alex Castellanos, recalled from ABQ for the third time this season. I honestly have no idea if the team views him as someone they can use in the infield at all, but with the amount of spare parts on the roster I’m guessing we won’t find out. He’ll be a pinch-hitter, mainly, and perhaps see some small amount of time in the outfield. The Dodgers now have 31 players on the active roster, though let’s be honest and say it’s 29, because Kenley Jansen was never officially put on the DL and that number includes the decaying corpse of Juan Uribe.
