Dodgers @ Pirates August 16, 2012: Blanton vs Burnett

If the Dodgers and Pirates play a midweek afternoon game with Joe Blanton and A.J. Burnett on the mound, which no one is really going to be able to watch live anyway, does it really even happen?

Speaking of Blanton, we found out today that pitcher Ryan O’Sullivan would be the player headed to Philadelphia to settle that trade, and I think that’s fantastic; I had expected it might be someone on the 40-man like Chris Withrow, Ivan De Jesus, or Josh Wall. O’Sullivan, 22 next month, was a 4th-round pick in the 2011 draft and has been pitching mainly in relief for High-A Rancho Cucamonga. Listed as a starter, Brandon Lennox of TrueBlueLA had him pegged as the #9 starter in the system this week, behind Aaron Miller & Stephen Fife, and it’s unlikely he was to ever provide more value to the Dodgers than Blanton will over two months, so I’m pretty pleased with that deal.

Don Mattingly eschews the house money lineup as he attempts to get that sweep, so no rest for Matt Kemp, Hanley Ramirez, Shane Victorino, or A.J. Ellis today. James Loney gets the start at first, and while it’s hardly a secret that he’s awful, it’s not just that he’s not driving the ball; as CodyStumpo noted in the last thread, he has only even walked once since June 23, that back on July 4. Jerry Sands, it should be noted, homered again last night, his third in five games and fifth in seven. Just sayin’.
