Tonight in Pittsburgh, the Dodgers and Pir–

Wait, hang on a second.

BahahahahahahahaMelky Cabrerabahahaha.

We should try not to be too over the top with glee about this, because obviously we’ve lived through what happens when your All-Star outfielder gets busted for PEDs, and there’s absolutely no guarantee that we don’t wake up tomorrow to find out that Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier or A.J. Ellis are next in line. (Well, not A.J; steroids inject him.) We could go around in circles arguing about whether PEDs really have an impact on performance – for every Barry Bonds, there’s 30 guys you never heard of even despite their enhancing – and it’s never really good for baseball as a whole when the guy who was the star of the All-Star Game gets busted like this.

But still, this isn’t just any random player going down. This is a guy hitting .346/.390/.516 for not only the historical rival of the Dodgers, but the team that they entered the day locked in a dead heat for first place with. It’s hard to think that Gregor Blanco (.232/.329/.343) or whomever else ends up replacing him doesn’t lead to a pretty massive dropoff in production, and even losing just one more game because of it could be crucial in the playoff race.

So the Giant loss is the Dodger gain, but only if the Dodgers take advantage of it. Having Clayton Kershaw on the hill tonight against the reeling Pirates seems like a good start.
