Dodgers @ Marlins August 12, 2012: Capuano vs LeBlanc

You know, I don’t put this team’s offensive struggles entirely on Don Mattingly, because at some point Shane Victorino & Andre Ethier have to hit, and it’s not his fault Ned Colletti isn’t able to give him better corner infield options than Juan Rivera (or James Loney) and Luis Cruz (or Juan Uribe).

Still, you’d think that he’d do something to shake things up other than just pencil in basically the same lineup every day. Does Mark Ellis (.234/.333/.327 since returning from DL) really have to hit second because he’s a second baseman? Does Ethier really have to play against lefties? Can we really not get the same or better production from Jerry Sands as from Loney & Rivera? There’s not immediately obvious answers to all of the problems, of course, but it still strikes me that doing the same thing and hoping for better results isn’t exactly the most productive use of time.
